When Presley came on the music scene in about I’d already been listening to blues & Soul Sam Cook for a couple

In the early 60s Edd started taking some of the older Guinn boys (David, Paul & Ronnie & myself – Hollands Boy) to Clearview Oklahoma an all black town Just a few miles from Pharaoh Oklahoma where I had just started attending junior high in 1960.

Edd was smooth, a good singer and a good dancer and I loved going to Clearview with him! I think just the mention of his name made my mom sick to her stomach! She just knew he was going to get us all in big trouble in Clearview.

The bar we went to in Clearview was named Eddies! Actually the bar was in the living room and kitchen of Eddie‘s home and Eddie made the best barbecued coon and possum on earth PEROID! Eddie’s home was one of about 50 in Clearview at that time.

A few whites and a few Indians also lived in Clearview! Most of the town was black.

The barbecue were not the only things that drew us to Eddie’s. Eddie had a radio that got radio stations as far away as Oklahoma City! But his prized possession was his real to real tape recording machine which blew our young mind…

If I remember correctly Eddie recorded David, Paul, Ed, Ronnie and me (back up singer) on a few country songs. Eddie would improvise as if he was playing the drums on chairs or the table or whatever he could find to bang and it was pretty good really… never did find out what happened to the recordings, never ask!

I suspect David & Paul eventually wound up with the tapes! They were the only two really serious about playing music! Later they often played in honky tonks around Henrietta, Okmulgee & a few times in Tulsa!

Anyway back at Eddie’s; he would serve anyone beer that could pay for it and we often had to wait an hour or more on the barbecue, nobody got in a rush back then. One night we even stayed all night at Eddie‘s…

So as we waited we listened to blues artist and new soul artists like Sam Cooke

Wikipedia says of Sam Cooke (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), that many (even back then) considered him the greatest singer, songwriter, of that time! Bigger & better than Elvis and in our minds eye he was a whole lot more gifted! Didn’t need to gyrate to get attention!

Sam was a pioneer in soul music and one of the most influential soul artists of all time, Cooke is commonly referred to as the “King of Soul” for his distinctive

vocals, notable contributions to the genre and high significance in popular music.

But his biggest contribution to me was he saved me from (just to name a few) Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin & Sandra Dee wannabes

And instead introduced me to (just to name a few) Sam Cook, Marvin Gaye, Ben King and Aretha Franklin. I will be forever appreciative to Eddie and Ed for that!

Sam Cook was killed in 1964 the same year I graduated! David, Paul and Ronnie Guinn never graduated from High School, they all quit school after the 8th grade. All have passed away in death now (Ronnie just a few weeks ago)

My mom thought they were all lazy! They would set under a shade tree and write and play music while her and I worked our butts off hoeing cotton and corn…. In all fairness they would help every now and then.

I didn’t mind it, just made me hoe harder so I could go play with them….

So many of his songs are my favorites like ‘Spanish Harlem’ and ‘a change is gonna come’ and ‘Stand by Me’!I suspect those 3 songs are three of the most covered songs in the soul genre.

Look him/them up some of the best music ever made….. and let me know what you guys think…

First let’s talk about Edd Scrimshire then Eddie’s bar in Clearview Oklahoma Edd Scrimshire, One of the so-called black sheep of the Scrimshire family, claimed he literally rebuilt a 1957 Hudson Hornet into what many said was one of the fanciest cars they had ever seen.
